The Last of UsSeason 2 has wrapped up after a divisive finale on Sunday night, but the story of Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) is far from over. The Last of Uswasrenewed for Season 3mere days before the Season 2 premiere, which sparked speculation about howThe Last of Us Part IIwas going to be split up. It’s become clearer how creatorsCraig MazinandNeil Druckmannare going to split things up now that the season is over.

ScreenRant attended a recent press conference forThe Last of UsSeason 2 finale, and asked if the relationship between Ellie and Dina (Isabela Merced) was going to be the primary dynamic going forward, now that Joel (Pedro Pascal) is dead. Mazin confirmed that there won’t be any kind of passing of the torch moment because“Joel will always be there.”But, he also spoke about Season 3, which will tell another part of the story that we“haven’t really had the chance to delve into yet.”Although many fans viewAbby as the villain ofThe Last of Us Part IIbecause she killed Joel, Mazin has a different outlook:

“That said, there is another side to this story that we have yet to really delve into. And there’s no question thatAbby is the hero of her story, Kaitlyn Dever is the hero of a story always, you know. I mean, if you have a Kaitlyn Dever, you use a Kaitlyn Dever.”

This is high praise coming from Mazin, who worked with Emmy nomineesPascal and Ramsey in Season 1. He went on to highlight another relationship that fans of the game are familiar with, and how, no matter who comes and goes, everything will be“under the cloud or sunlight of Joel”:

“So, I think where we go next, all I can say is, it will always be centring somebody, whether it’s Ellie and Dina, or whether it’s Abby and Abby’s relationship with Owen, or new relationships. If you play the game, you probably know what I’m talking about. But everything, really, if you want to boil it down, everything is under the cloud or sunlight of Joel, what Joel did to Abby and what Joel did for Ellie, andthat will never change.”

Although it’s unclear at this time whenThe Last of UsSeason 3will begin production or be released, it will shine a light on what Abby was doing during the days that Ellie was hunting for her.
