Last night the VES Awards were handed out, and the big winners of the night wereAvengers: Infinity War,Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, andLost in Space.Infinity Wartook home the night’s top prize of “Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature” along with wins for “Outstanding Effects Simulations in a Photoreal Feature” (Titan), “Outstanding Animated Character in a Photoreal Feature” (Thanos), and “Outstanding Compositing in a Photoreal Feature” (Titan again). Over on the animated side,Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Versepicked up four awards including “Outstanding Visual Effects in an Animated Feature”.
So what does this mean forInfinity War’s Oscar chances? The winner of the VES award for “Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature” has gone on to take home the Oscar 10 out of the last 16 times. If a film has a Best Picture nomination, it usually gets a bit of an edge, but this year, none of the Visual Effects nominees are nominated for Best Picture. In that case, the Oscar can go to the “artier” of the nominees as it did last year whenBlade Runner 2049won overWar for the Planet of the Apes. That means that the stiffest competition forInfinity Warright now isFirst Man. We’ll know who comes out on top when the Oscars air on February 24th.
