We are deep into Oscars territory by now, folks, and while it’s a period that often comes with some truly, trulydumb controversy, it’s also a time for celebrating the pure joy that is film. Case in point: A fantastic new “For Your Consideration” video released by Marvel taking a behind-the-scenes look atBlack Panther’s score, which has been nominated alongsideIf Beale Street Could Talk,BlackKklansman,Isle of Dogs, andMary Poppins Returns.

“When you find someone who gets you as an artist, that’s something you want to hold on to,” directorRyan Cooglersays in the video. “This film, I couldn’t see anyone else doing it but Ludwig.”

And truly, it is great to see the care composerLudwig Göranssontook in craftingBlack Panther’s music. The film’s heavily Africa-influenced score plays huge on-screen, but it’s also the most distinctive in the Marvel Cinematic Universe; the moment those drums cut intoAvengers: Infinity Waris one of the hypest “oh, here we go” moments of 2018. So it’s downright fascinating to see those massive, instantly recognizable sounds being recorded in a tiny West African studio with artistBaaba Maal. It’s just a sense of authenticity, more than anything, that permeates not just the music but the entire movie.

“The instruments are more than just music,” Coogler says. “They’re a way of life, a way of communication…passed down through generations and that had a profound effect on our movie. It was something we tried to keep in mind, paying homage to human history.”
