Christopher Nolanis hard at work filming his next movie,The Odyssey, but before it officially wraps production later this year, one of his biggest masterpieces has become a global streaming sensation. In 2014, Nolan directedInterstellarfrom a script he co-wrote with his brother,Jonathan Nolan. The film follows Joseph Cooper (Matthew McConaughey), a former astronaut-turned-farmer who is called back to space to find a new planet for humans to inhabit. Currentlystreaming on Paramount+ in America,Interstellarrecently beganstreaming on Netflix globally, and the film has surged into the top 10 in more than 20 countries worldwide. Itearned a “certified fresh” 73% from critics and an 87% from audiences onRotten Tomatoes, and it also grossed $758 million globally against a $165 million budget, making it a solid financial success.
During a 2014 interview withCollider, Nolan spoke aboutInterstellar, saying that he believes the film dives into “human nature,” and“what it means to be human.”He also said that it’s the first film he ever made where the actual experience of watching it is “paramount to the audience.” In addition to Matthew McConaughey, Nolan also recruited some major stars to feature inInterstellar, one of which he’ll reunite with soon.Anne Hathawayalso stars inInterstellaras Brand, and she’s been cast in an undisclosed role inThe Odysseyas well.Jessica ChastainandDavid Oyelowoalso star inInterstellaralong with a youngTimothée Chalamet. Nolan even enlistedMatt Damonfor a small villain role in the film, but he went on to redeem himself the following year with another space epic,The Martian.

‘The Odyssey’ Has Already Broken an Important Record
WhileThe Odysseyis still in production, Universal Pictures did something unprecedented, which was toput tickets for the film on sale nowahead of its June 05, 2025, release date. Although only 70mm IMAX tickets went up for pre-sale, it has alreadysold more than another Nolan movie,Memento, did during its first three weeks in theaters. After Nolan just barely missed out on $1 billion with his most recent film,Oppenheimer, it would not be surprising to see him return to that threshold again withThe Odyssey.The Dark KnightandThe Dark Knight Risesboth previously crossed $1 million.
