New Posters Revealed forX-Men,DaredevilandCivil War
Jon Schnepp starts the show with breaking news! It’s poster madness and the panel looks at every single image that dropped over the past couple of days. First up is theX-Men: Apocalypseposter showing the Four Horsemen from the upcoming film: Magneto, Archangel, Storm and Psylocke with Apocalypse standing, menacingly, behind them. The panel wasn’t too interested in the poster, claiming it was a bit too photoshopped for their liking. Then again, at least it’s not a bunch of floating heads. After, they go immediately in to the bevy of posters released by Disney showing the two sides toCaptain America: Civil War. Both #TeamCap and #TeamIronMan are on display with opposing posters showing every hero and on what side they are on for the movie. And lastly, on to the Netflix portion andDaredevil, which finally reveals The Punisher with his classic, skull shirt. All in all, the panel enjoyed the posters withDaredevilas the one, true stand-out for the bunch - not bad, for a ‘tv show.’
Captain America: Civil WarRuntime Announced
Next the panel looked at the recent news thatCaptain America: Civil War’sruntime will clock in at 2:27 minutes – a few minutes shy ofBatman v Superman’sruntime. The panel did like the idea of a long movie forCivil Warand inevitably compared it toBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. While the panel was a little weary of theBvSruntime as they have a lot to prove, with theCivil Warruntime, it seems to make a lot of sense as everyone knows what to expect from a Marvel movie of this kind. The panel felt like this third movie in theCaptain Americaseries feels like an end to an era or a final chapter to a larger story. All in all, the panel is really looking forward to a longerCivil Warmovie (and for the record, a longBatman v Supermanmovie).
Russo Bros. Talk 15-Minute IMAX Scene forCivil War
In a recent interview,Joe Russotalked about a sequence that he mentioned to Schnepp and Campea last year on Movietalk. Joe said, “We’re referring to this sequence as the Splash Panel or the double panel. If you’re a comic book fan you know that as any epic comic book you would open in two pages. As a kid, I would just go through and look at who was fighting who. I’d stand there in the store for 15 minutes until the guy told me to buy the book or get out. So this sequence is our live-action splash panel or double panel. It’s a big epic sequence; the only sequence shot completely in IMAX 65 camera.” This quote, of course, led to an excited conversation as everyone speculated on what the scene might detail and where it came in the movie.
DeadpoolBreaks $300 Million Domestic
Finally:Deadpoolbreaks $300 million domestically which is now the 3rd highest domestic grossing R-Rated movie of all time. The panel talked a bit about how this happened, how it made five times its budget – just domestically! Their conversation then turned to how the studios will no doubt, look to copy the success. The panel cautioned just throwing an R-rating on any superhero movie. Everyone agreed,Deadpoolwas a perfect storm as to why it worked. As Campea said, a Witches Cauldron of reasons how and why it worked and worked big-time. Turning to their other successful mutant franchise, the panel hoped Fox doesn’t now try and “Deadpool” up their X-Men franchise. The two different franchises are working, for a reason, and the studio doesn’t need to deviate from the formula.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt ExitsSandmanMovie for New Line Cinema
After the production was moved from WB to the New Line division, and the announcement of a new writerEric HeissererfromFinal Destination 5andConjuring 2, was rewriting the script, now comes the news thatJoseph Gordon-Levitthas left the production he was going to direct and star in… The panel breaks down this news and why they think Gordon-Levitt exited the project. The ongoing theory is that the studio wanted to water down the source material and make it more of a “horror” movie rather than sticking close to the source material. Everyone has the utmost respect for Gordon-Levitt and everyone is very disappointed he left the project. Now they wonder who could step in to replace Gordon-Levitt both as a star and a director.
Venom Standalone Movie Announced.
Sony has announced production starting on a new feature film based on the characterVenom, but not involvingSpider-Manor his universe set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Schnepp jumps in first, wondering how they are going to tackle this particular character. The main points were how and why? How are you going to do a Venom movie without Spider-Man? The other point, is this a copy-cat situation with Sony trying to create their ownDeadpool.The panel agrees, this seems to reek of studio interference, especially with the producers ofAvi AradandMatt Tolmach(Amazing Spider-Man) coming on board. Everyone agrees, however, this IS a Spider-Man character and it’s going to be really hard to not include Spidey – seeing as Venom’s identity is, literally, linked to Peter Parker’s Spider-Man. The panel is pretty sold that this is not a good idea.
J. Jonah Jameson Is Now Commissioner Gordon inJustice League
JK Simmonshas been cast as Commissioner Gordon in the newJustice Leaguefeature film. It will begin principal photography on April 11th, 2016. The main story everyone is talking about is, simply, how JK Simmons can go from J. Jonah Jameson to DC’s Commissioner Gordon. Many on the panel were disappointed that JK wouldn’t be back for anotherSpider-Manbut JK’s legitimacy, the prestige he brings toJustice Leagueis what everyone is excited about in the end. Moreover, everyone on the panel wondered ifBen Affleckhad a personal say for this casting, seeing as the rumors out there suggest Ben Affleck will be writing and directing (and starring) inThe Batmanmovie. Ben Affleck wanted JK Simmons in the movie, everyone agrees.

Flashback:The Dark Knight(2008)
Here comes the big guns, one of the greatest superhero adaptations, in Schnepp’s opinion,Christopher Nolan’sincredible masterpiece:The Dark Knight. Released in 2008, this was the sequel to the successful franchise reboot that Nolan made in 2005, reintroducing a new Batman to the world, many years after the horrible stink of 1997’sBatman and Robinhad long since blown over.Christian Balewas back as Bruce Wayne and The Batman this time, several years into his mission against organized crime in Gotham. One villain has opened up a reign of terror, using the call of chaos as his mission statement, this being The Joker; masterfully played by the lateHeath Ledger, who won an Oscar posthumously for his chilling portrayal. This film put Batman against his most lethal foe, and created the villain Two-Face in the process. This film has all the makings of one of the greatest crime stories, only with costumed characters battling evil clowns and burnt, insane lawyers.
Spotlight:The Doom Patrol
This weeks Spotlight shines on theDoom Patrol, created byArnold Drake. This bizarre group consisted of monstrous outcasts led on dangerous missions by the wheelchair-bound Dr. Caulder. The Doom Patrol’s original core group is comprised of Robotman, ElastiGirl, NegativeMan, Mento, and Beastboy. Later iterations byPaul Kupprberg,Grant MorrisonandJohn Byrneadded and subtracted different team players, killing off as many members as they would add. They always went up against bizarre villains like the Brotherhood of Evil, the Scissormen, Madame Rouge, and a bunch of insane super-monsters of the week. Could this offbeat collection of misfits make a good television series or feature film?
