This week, after a month in cinemas, the anime movie has already set another record on its ever-growing slate:Demon Slayer: Infinity Castleis now among the top five highest-grossing movies ever in Japan, with ¥25.3 billion made so far — roughly $175 million. The movie premieres in U.S. theaters on September 12.
The number means thatDemon Slayer: Infinity Castlehas now outperformed some major titles locally, includingFrozen. The Disney animated movie made approximately ¥25.5 billion back in 2013, whileInfinity Castlenow stands at ¥25.3. And since this is only the first month of screenings, this number will keep going up for some time. The newDemon Slayerhas also outperformed the global sensationYour Name— theMakoto Shinkaianime movie that remains among the top 10 highest-grossing movies ever in Japan.
Now,Infinity Castleis really close to the top three, with only the major blockbusterTitanicstanding in its way. However, theDemon Slayerfranchise has done it before: five years ago,Demon Slayer: Mugen Trainrose to the top to become not only the highest-grossing movie in Japan ever, but also thehighest-grossing movie globally in 2020. WillDemon Slayerbe able to outperform itself? We’ll have to wait a bit to see.
