This might be a good day for this idea to die hard … with a vengeance. There have been rumors circling about aDie Hard 6movie for awhile, but it seems to have recently picked up a little more steam.Bruce Willis’ John McClane may well ride again in a prequel story that could have Willis splitting screen time with a younger version of his legendary character.

According toDeadline, Fox is in the process of making a deal withLen Wiseman(director ofLive Free Or Die Hard) to return to the franchise with producerLorenzo di Bonaventura. The two are supposedly looking for a screenwriter who can make the story into a prequel that will keep Willis in the works. The main action, though, would take place in 1979, where McClane was a gritty New York cop, and the plot would chart the origin of his commitment to dying hard.

If you think this sounds like a terrible idea, you are not alone (and it sounds more like a reboot than a sequel, for what it’s worth). Willis has reportedly been kept in the loop throughout this process, since he and di Bonaventura have a close relationship. Fox is hoping di Bonaventura can raise another tent pole for them with the project, but regardless, anotherDie Hardfilm is pretty likely to make a lot of money. 2007’sLive Free or Die Hardgrossed $383 million worldwide, whileJohn Moore’sA Good Day To Die Hardgarnered just a bit more than $300 million (despite being panned).

There are a lot of great ways that a newDie Hardmovie could be approached, and if di Bonaventura and Wiseman find the right screenwriter, something good could come of it. But it could also go very wrong.
