The 2021 Emmy nominations have arrived! While 2020 was an odd year in many ways,Watchmenwas the talk of the town when last year’s Emmy nominations rolled around, and it reigned supreme during the virtual telecast alongsideSuccessionandSchitt’s Creek. For 2021, the Emmys have already commited to a live ceremony, which means the contenders from this robust list of nominees will be live and in person to accept their trophies for the best of television from the past calendar year.
The CrownandThe Mandalorianlead in total Emmy nominations with 24 each, followed closely behind byWandaVisionwhcih racked up 23 nominations. Marvel Studios' first-ever TV series scored all the major nominations, including acting nods forElizabeth Olsen,Paul Bettany, andKathryn Hahn, and also dominated the Writing category with three nominations and a directing nomination. But it faces stiff competition in the Limited Series category, which also includesMare of Easttown,The Queen’s Gambit, andI May Destroy You.
The other Marvel series eligible,The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, only picked up one major nomination forDon Cheadlefor Guest Actor in a Drama Series, whileThe Mandalorianpicked up two Guest Actor nods forTimothy OlyphantandCarl Weathers.
Perhaps the biggest shockers came in the Best Drama Series and Best Comedy Series categories. Amazon’s bloody superhero showThe Boysscored a surprise Best Drama Series nomination, whileCobra Kailanded in Best Comedy.
