Warner Bros. has released a new trailer-like video forFantastic Beasts 2that runs down the majorHarry Potterconnections in the film—or at least the ones that we know of so far. When the firstFantastic Beasts and Where to Find Themmovie was released, most fans expectsomeconnections to theHarry Potterfranchise, but by and large were ready for a film set in a new corner of the Wizarding World. We certainly got that, but the reveal of Gellert Grindelwald as the Big Bad of this franchise setFantastic Beastson a collision course withPotterlore that only gets more explicit in the sequelFantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.
Indeed, the follow-up brings Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) into the fold and shows Grindelwald in possession of the Elder Wand, which you’ll recall is one of the three Deathly Hallows. But as this new video points out, there are even more serious connections to thePotteruniverse. You’ll recall that Grindelwald in disguise asColin Farrell(#MyOneTrueGrindelwald) gave Credence a Deathly Hallows necklace in the firstFantastic Beasts. This video also shows some new footage fromFantastic Beasts 2that really hones in on the relationship between Dumbledore and Grindelwald, including Dumbledore alluding to his romantic love for the evil wizard.

At the end of the first film, the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) was captured by MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America), with the help of Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne). But, making good on his threat, Grindelwald escaped custody and has set about gathering followers, most unsuspecting of his true agenda: to raise pure-blood wizards up to rule over all non-magical beings. In an effort to thwart Grindelwald’s plans, Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) enlists his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world.
