It’s no surprise thatTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadowswould hop atop the box office for Friday, but there’s more to the story than just that. It’s Friday numbers ($12.5 million) suggest a moderate opening weekend around $36 million that will have it making a little more than half of Paramount’s payday with the original. 2014’s film garnered an eventual $195 million domestic gross, and $493.2 million globally. It looks like to recoup its $125 million budget,Turtles 2is going to need to perform very well internationally in the coming weeks.
As for Fox’sX-Men Apocalypse, it has suffered a sharp 66% decline for its second weekend, falling to $6.5 million on Friday and looking to head into a $22 million weekend. ThoughApocalypseis not the first X-Men film to fall sharply in its second week, its $100 million revenue so far is nothing to shake a stick at.

Elsewhere on the charts, Warner Bros.’sMe Before Youis charming its way into exceeding box office expectations, taking the #2 spot ahead ofApocalypsewith only half of the screens. It brought in almost $8 million Friday night, with predictions putting near an eventual $20 million. Lonely Island’sPopster: Never Stop Never Stoppingfrom Universal is also appearing as a mild but steady performer, bringing in nearly $2 million for its Friday.
Alice in WonderlandsequelThrough the Looking Glass, directed byJames Bobbin, has garnered a domestic total so far of $43 million, a far cry from the (surprising) $1 billion worldwide that its original took in 2010. Still, it continues to perform modestly, alongsideThe Angry Birds MovieandCaptain America: Civil War, the latter of which seems to have claimed the throne of the highest grossing movie this year, domestically.
