‘Eurovision Song Contest’ Is Bringing Surprises
Coming to the world from Switzerland, the 2025 contest has already brought some major surprises to fans following both Semi-Final Rounds. With 37 entries in this year’s contest, it’s been a battle to make it to Saturday’s Final. While many had assumed that “Strobe Lights,” Belgium’s entry byRed Sebastian, would be a shoo-in for the finals, Belgium missed out for the second year in a row. Historically, most years see the final two acts of the night move forward, but Croatia’s “Poison Cake” byMarko Bošnjakand Cyprus' “Shh” byTheo Evansdid not qualify. The ten acts from Semi-Final 1 moving forward will be Iceland, Poland, Estonia, Ukraine, Sweden, Portugal, Norway, San Marino, Albania, and the Netherlands.
Despite beginning the evening with an explosive performance, Australia’s Go-Jo did not qualify for the finals with his exceptional performance of “Milkshake Man.” The next two acts of the night, Nina Žižić from Montenegro and Emmy from Ireland were also shut out.The ten acts from Semi-Final 22 moving forward will be Latvia, Armenia, Austria, Greece, Lithuania, Malta, Denmark, Luxembourg, Israel, and Finland. The twenty acts moving forward will be joined by the Big Five, comprised of Spain, Germany, France Italy, and the United Kingdom, as well as host nation Switzerland.

As many fans hoped for an in-person appearance from Switzerland’s 1988’s Eurovision Song Contest winnerCeline Dion, she did send a pre-recorded message as four former 2024 entrants,Marina Sattifrom Greece,Jerry Heilfrom Ukraine,Iolandafrom Portugal, andSilvester Beltfrom Lithuania, sang “Ne partez pas sans moi.” During Semi-Final 2, performances included intended acts from the 2020 canceled contest, including Switzerland’sGjon’s Tears, Lithuania’sThe Roop, Azerbaijan’sEfendi, and Malta’sDestiny. The finals will feature 26 acts in a high-octane evening, where Graham Norton will be on hand to present for the UK.
