Apple played a major gamble over the Memorial Day holiday frame, debuting the action-adventure filmFountain of Youthon its Apple TV+ streaming service while two massive new movies were released in theaters. Disney’sLilo & Stitchremake and Paramount’sMission: Impossible - The Final Reckoninggrossed a combined total of over half-a-billion dollars at the global box office this past weekend, whileFountain of Youthdominated the streaming charts. In fact, it wasthe most popular title on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoeson May 26.

According toFlixPatrol,Fountain of Youthscored exactly 100 points, outperforming titles such asMission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning,Warfare,Nonnas, andBlack Bag. Directed byGuy Ritchie, the movie has also beentopping the Apple TV+ viewership charts since its debut last week; it claimed the number one position fromScott Derrickson’s romantic thrillerThe Gorge, which had been ruling over the Apple charts since its debut in February. Because the streamer releases fewer tent poles as compared to its competitors, movies tend to remain static on the charts for longer periods of time.

Fountain of Youth’s popularity onRotten Tomatoesis especially curious, seeing as itreceived poor reviews. It currently holds a “rotten” 36% score, while its audience score on the aggregator is sitting at 44%.In his review, Collider’sNate Richardwrote, “At its core,Fountain of Youthplays like an old-school adventure movie, one that, despite taking place in the present day, wants to present itself as timeless.“Fountain of YouthstarsJohn KrasinskiandNatalie Portmanin the lead roles of siblings with opposing views on the idea of adventure.

Ritchie Has Multiple Projects in the Pipeline

They’re pulled into quite the epic mission nonetheless. Joined by their team and a wealthy benefactor, the siblings go on the hunt for the mythical Fountain of Youth in Egypt, evading capture by a bunch of Thai goons and the Interpol. Also featured areEiza González,Domhnall Gleeson,Carmen Ejogo, andArian Moayed. Ritchie has been on a prolific spree in recent years, having directed films such asThe Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfareand episodes of shows such asThe GentlemenandMobLand. He already has two new movies and a new streaming series in the works.
