Taika Waititiis one of the industries greatest visionary filmmakers, and for quite a while, we’ve heard rumblings about his own take on aStar Warsmovie. First announced in May of 2020, we haven’t gotten much information on it. Just that he’s working on it and that it is reportedly really great. Now, atStar Wars Celebrationin Japan,Kathleen Kennedygave us yet another update stating the same hope for the film. In the shared media suite between ColliderandScreenRant, ScreenRant’sAsh Crossanspoke with Kennedy about the film. Basically it’s still being worked on, andwe still don’t know what it is about.
“Taika is on Taika time…” Kennedy said about the movie but it doesn’t seem like she is in a rush to have him hurry with the screenplay. She went on to tell Crossan that she just wants Waititi to be happy with theStar Warsstory that he is creating and make sure that it is going to be a “great"Star Warsfilm. “I’ve just continually said to him, ‘Look, when you feel that you’re ready and you may really devote the time, we’re going to do it. We’ll be waiting…‘I’m just hoping we get there.That will be a great Star Wars movie.”
Out of a slate of announcedStar Warsfilms, Waititi’s isone of the few that survived throughout the last five years. Other shelved projects includePatty Jenkins’ filmRogue Squadronthat was, reportedly, “back on track"in May of 2024 but has since had no updates. Waititi’s plot and story is still a mystery to fans.
Taika Waititi Likes to Have Fun With His Genre Films
One of Waititi’s best films isThor: Ragnarok, the third installment in theChris Hemsworth-ledThorfilms. He brought a bright and fun energy to the franchise, allowed Thor and his brother Loki(Tom Hiddleston) to be fun, and what we do know of hisStar Warsfilm is a colorful logo. Waititi’s work has humor and wit mixed in with heartwarming moments which does, in a lot of ways, really work withStar Warsas a whole. ButKennedy’s comments about letting Waititi take his time and work on the script as he sees fit is encouraging! At least Lucasfilm wants a great script first and foremost.
