WWE superstarBecky Lynchis branching out into acting, and is set to star on the upcomingStar Trek: Starfleet Academyseries. But before she boldly goes where no The Man has gone before, she talked to Variety about her history with the franchise, and her favoriteStar Trekstar. Those who know that Lynch (real nameRebecca Quin) hails from Ireland may have been able to guess that her fave is countrymanColm Meaney, who starred as Miles O’Brien, “the most important person in Starfleet history,” onStar Trek: The Next GenerationandDeep Space Nine.
Lynch, who recently returned to the squared circle at last month’sWrestleMania, discussed her stint on the show, but couldn’t reveal much: “I’m on the bridge crew, and filming on the bridge, it was one of the most amazing sets I’ve ever been on.” And while she wasn’t a hardcore Trekkie, she’d had plenty of exposure to the franchise: “I grew up whenStar Trekwas one of the two shows that was on TV in Ireland, on whatever four channels we had, so it was always on in the background. I can’t say that I sat down and watched, but I did love the movies.And Colm Meaney. We all love Colm Meaney, any time he was on, you sit down and watch that.” She also revealed that she wasn’t the only wrestler on-set, as husband and fellow grapplerSeth Rollinsvisited the production with their four-year-old daughter,Roux, who was “a little overwhelmed by the size of everything, I think, but it was awesome.”
What Do We Know About ‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’?
Starfleet Academywill be set at the titular place of learning, which has been glimpsed at various times throughout a number of previousStar Trekseries. It will take place in the 32nd century, following the latter three seasons ofStar Trek: Discovery, in which the Federation was shattered by a galaxy-spanning disaster, the Burn. The show will follow the first new post-Burn Starfleet Academy class as they experience adventure, romance, and danger. Those students will be played byZoëSteiner,Bella Shepard,Kerrice Brooks,George Hawkins,Karim Diané, andSandro Rosta, while the faculty will include a chancellor played byHolly Hunter, Starfleet veterans Jett Reno (Tig Notaro), Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman), Charles Vance (Oded Fehr), andStar Trek: Voyager’s holographic Doctor (Robert Picardo), along with franchise newcomerGina Yashere.Tatiana Maslanywill portray an unspecified role on the series, andPaul Giamattiwill play the first season’s main villain.
Starfleet Academyisn’t Lynch’s first acting role: she made her on-screen debut in the WWE-produced action movieThe Marine 6: Close Quarters, and also playedCyndi Lauperon the sitcomYoung Rock. She is also set to star in the upcomingAdam Sandlercomedy sequelHappy Gilmore 2this summer.
