As Warner Bros. Discovery pushes forward with its high-profileHarry PotterTV rebootfor Max, HBO’s Chief Content OfficerCasey Bloysis directly addressing one of the most pressing questions surrounding the franchise: what role, if any, willJ.K. Rowling’s divisive personal viewsplay in the new series?
In an interview withMatt BelloniforPuck, Bloys tackled the issue head-on when asked about Rowling’s ongoing public stance on transgender rights and the firestorm it continues to generate online and withinfan communities. Bloys emphasized that the views Rowling holds are, for the purposes of the series, her own, and that they were irrelevant to the development of the television production.
“The decision to be in business with J.K. Rowling is not new for us. We’ve been in business for 25 years.We already have a show on HBO from her calledC.B. Strikethat we do with the BBC. It’s pretty clear that those are her personal, political views. She’s entitled to them.Harry Potteris not secretly being infused with anything. And if you want to debate her, you may go on Twitter.”
What Has JK Rowling Said About Transgender People?
Rowling’s comments on transgender identity—most notably a 2020 essay and multiple tweets over the years—have led tosustained backlash from LGBTQ+ advocates, as well as from formerHarry Potterstars likeDaniel Radcliffe,Emma Watson, andRupert Grint, who have publicly disagreed with her views. Despite the criticism, Rowling remains an executive producer on the new Max series, which will adapt all seven books across a planned decade-long run.
Bloys' comments mark the first public attempt by HBO to distance the show’s creative intent from Rowling’s off-screen persona, while still affirming the company’s long-standing professional relationship with the author, which, let’s be frank, is worth far too much money to both parties to sour. WBD and HBO are no strangers to having to deal with the aftermath of Rowling’s comments, too. Back in 2022, a special reuniting many members of the cast, entitledHarry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts, streamed on Max, but conspicuously omitted any new interview footage with Rowling, opting instead for archival clips.
