The month of August is coming to a close, and if you have a calendar counting down all of the superhero releases in movies and television you know that this next month will bring Marvel’sLuke Cage, followed by the Fall premiere of other superhero shows likeArrowandThe Flash, and let’s not forget aboutDoctor Strangehitting theaters in November. So, while we wait for what will hopefully be a great last part of the year in terms of superhero material, let’s recap the biggest news pieces of the week surrounding superhero projects....

It’s safe to say that never in cinema’s history has there been a franchise quite like the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Aside from being so expansive and popular that it’s become by far the highest-grossing movie franchise of all time, it has offered fans a shockingly wide array of heroes and villains to enjoy over the years. Though most characters in the MCU often show up for more adventures, there are some whose appearance is limited to only one movie....

Warner Bros. has released the firstThe Legend of Tarzantrailer online. The film starsAlexander Skarsgardas the titular man of the jungle withMargot Robbieplaying his beloved Jane. In this latest telling, Tarzan has becomes domesticated and lives in London, but is called back to his jungle home when he becomes a pawn in the game of the dastardly Captain Leon Rom (Christoph Waltz). But little does Rom know that he got more than he bargained for when he brought in the “Lord of the Apes”....

WandaVisionis on its way to Disney+, and its overall sense of weirdness seems to have triggered a trippy vibe throughout the MCU. Phase 4, whichWandaVisionofficially kicks off, looks to be the franchise’s experimenting-with-drugs-during-freshman-year phase.Doctor Strangeis headed into amultiverseofmadness. Shang-Chi is going to take on themystical Ten Rings. TheEternalsare coming, Christian Bale is going tothrow a God Bombat Thor, and at some point, Ant-Man must tangle with somethingcalled Quantumania. Unclear what that is, but seems bad....

For many fans ofWes Craven’sA Nightmare on Elm Streetfranchise, the sixth movieFreddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmaresits near the bottom of their ranking. It is criticized for pushing Freddy’s goofiness too far and losing what made him so scary in the 1984 original. Also, being the sixth movie in less than 10 years, there was a feeling of fatigue surrounding the franchise. However, despite its flaws,Freddy’s Deadstill manages to capture how terrifyingFreddy Krueger(Robert Englund) can be through one of its death sequences....

Thehorrorgenre is as popular as ever with franchises likeHalloweenreaching new heights thanks toMichael Myers’ recent batch of films. However, in the early 2000s, like most slasher series,Halloween’s brand was diminished by its large number of sequels. Most of which were on the lower end of the quality spectrum. The final nail in the coffin for Michael at the time wasHalloween: Resurrection. The 2002 film is often considered the worst “Night He Came Home”....

Now thatTransformers: Combiner Warshas premiered, fans of the Hasbro characters and/or IDW comics storyline can finally see their favorite bots in action. And there’s plenty of action to be found in the first five-minute episode in the series, one that opens with metal-crunching mayhem as two massive Combiners - revealed to be Computron and Menasor - battle through space. Their metallic fists are just the first to fly as Autobots and Decepticons alike attempt to control (or eliminate) the threat posed by the massive Combiners....

When the animated comedy seriesStar Wars Detourswas announced at Star Wars Celebration in 2012, it came a mere months before the future of the franchise shifted course forever through the Disney acquisition. At the time, the saga’s future rested on the animated seriesThe Clone Wars,as the prospects of a proposed live-action seriesseemed far away and the 3D re-release ofThe Phantom Menacehad bombed in theaters. The idea of not one, but two concurrent shows set within the galaxy far, far away was inherently exciting, but a far cry away from themassive wave ofStar Warscontent comingwithin the next few years....

I love love. This is an obvious prerequisite for anyone whose favorite genre is romance, but what is so compelling about these themes on a personal level goes far beyond what we are generally presented with on screen. It’s what comes after the fall that makes for a good narrative: the building of trust, the friendship, the eventual distinction between physical and emotional intimacy, the shift as newness gives way to comfort and stability....
