This Sunday, the Academy Awards will present awards to the best in film from 2022 in 23 categories ranging from Best Documentary Short to Best Picture. This year’s nominees are an impressive batch, from the bombastic nature ofEverything Everywhere All at Once, the engrossing animated shortMy Year of Dicks, the shocking documentaryNavalny, to some questionable choices that have left Oscar fans scratching their heads. The Academy Awards is packed with great nominees in every category, many of which get overlooked for some of the flashier, more mainstream nominees....

There has to be some hesitation in saying so right now, but things are on track for the 2020s to be the greatest decade to be aGodzillafan. There’s an argument to be made that the greatest film in the series came out way back in the 1950s, sure, and the 1960s was a decade during whichGodzillamovies were coming out most steadily. Also, for those who like variety in theirGodzillafilms,the 1990s was a pretty great timeto be a fan, given that decade saw the release of five Heisei era films, one American blockbuster, and then the first movie of the Millennium era....

The 100th episode ofArrowhas now come and gone, having aired on The CW last night. The November 30th installment had the mutual challenge of being a milestone as well as part of The CW’s heroes-vs.-aliens"Invasion!" crossover. Speaking to press earlier this week,ArrowExecutive ProducerMarc Guggenheimtalked a bit about what it was like to juggle it all together. “That was the challenge was just how much to service the 100th episode-ness, and how much to service the crossover,” Guggenheim said about the balancing act....

A new horror movie from A24,Men, directed byAlex Garland(Annihilation,Ex Machina) is set to be released on May 20. The film follows a young woman (played byJessie Buckley) who, in the wake of her husband’s death, goes on a vacation by herself to the English countryside. The film also featuresRory Kinnear, who, from the trailer, appears to be playing multiple sinister roles. Having the same person play many roles is a long tradition, both on stage and in film....

Last year (after many,manyyears of doing it), I got burned out on doing weekly recaps of TV shows. There’s something about the grind of recapping that can take away the enjoyment out of watching television. Most shows don’t need episodic breakdowns and analysis — it’s better to just exist in their world. It’s not a judgement on their quality or complexity, but just a comment on their style. Some shows are fun to obsess over and pick apart, and some are full of outrageous moments that beg for discussion....

Netflix’s animated seriesBig Mouthis known for telling stories of puberty with humor, heart, and absolutely no filter. Other shows may be fairly frank about periods, wet dreams, and masturbation; you will probably have a hard time finding any that actually personify penises, diaphragms, and pubes. With talent likeNick KrollandAndrew Goldbergbehind the camera — mining their real-life experiences as childhood friends for storyline inspiration — the producers have been able to castBig Mouth’s recurring characters with wildly talented and beloved performers....

WhenJokerbecame not only themost profitable comic book movie of all timebut thefirst R-rated movie to cross $1 billion, the big brains over at Warner Bros. decided that, yeah, they’d like some more of that, please. It’s a little strange that studios need to keep learning the lesson that R-rated films, allowing either more thoughtful exploration of mature subject matter or just being able to get away with all manner of sex, violence, and explicit language, actually reach a rather broad and worldwide audience....

Spoilers forBlack Pantherfollow below. As evidenced by itsbehemoth box officeand glowing reviews, people really, really likeBlack Panther. It’s one of the biggest and most groundbreaking Marvel Studios films yet, and that’s due in large part to the talents of co-writer/directorRyan Coogler, who brought a clear, unique, and ambitious vision to the table. Audiences are eating it up, and indeed the film is equal parts crowdpleaser and thought-provoking drama as Coogler weaves in themes that speak to the world we live in today, in between scenes ofDanai Gurirakicking ass....

The trailer forCastlevaniaSeason 4 is here! As this will be the final season of the show, fans of the series are preparing to say goodbye to some of their favorite characters and with that comes the knowledge that it might not exactly be a happy ending for Trevor Belmont. Warner Bros. has released a new trailer forDunkirk, the World War II action-thriller from writer/directorChristopher Nolan. The film chronicles the evacuation of Dunkirk, a British military operation that saved 330,000 lives as Allied soldiers were surrounded by German forces. Nolan reunites with hisInterstellarcinematographerHoyte van Hoytemaon this history-based follow-up, and the two shot the film entirely with IMAX 65mm film and 65mm large-format photography, promising a moviegoing experience of epic proportions....

Netflix has released the first full trailer for its upcomingFear Streettrilogy, based on the books by hit horror authorR.L. Stine. The trailer’s arrival was teased yesterday and debuted as a part of the streaming service’sGeeked Week, a five-day virtual fan event that kicked off this week and is devoted to covering exclusive news, trailers, first looks, and more from Netflix’s most popular genre series and most-anticipated movies. The trailer gives even more of an expansive look into the terrors that have been lurking in the town of Shadyside over the last 300 years, where a group of teens in 1994 discover that they’re not the first generation to face an evil threat — and they may have to look to the past to find a way to defeat it....
