Earlier this year, the worlds ofAbbott ElementaryandIt’s Always Sunny in Philadelphiacollided in the first half of a Philly-set crossover. The first half took place at the ABC home of Abbott, meaning the Paddy’s Pub gang had their usual R-rated antics toned down. However, with the second half taking place on FX’sAlways Sunny, get ready to see a whole new side of Abbott’s teachers.Abbott Elementarycreator and starQuinta Brunsondiscussed the other side of the crossover in a recent appearance onJimmy Kimmel Live.
After a conversation with hostJimmy Kimmelthat ranged from Brunson’s encounter withJill Bidenat theSuper Bowland her experience atSaturday Night Live’s50th anniversary special, conversation turned to the crossover. Brunson described theAlways Sunnyhalf of the crossover as “way more raunchy than ours.” She added, “It was fun! It was fun seeing what Janine, the character I play on the show, what she sounds like when she’s saying words I can’t say on this program.” Brunson also discussed working with “national treasure"Danny DeVito, who was “so game” for everything theAbbottwriters threw at him, including a sequence where he ended up in a raccoon trap. However, she clarified that he only spent two hours in the small cage, not two days, nor, as Kimmel suggests, did they lure him into it with a Jersey Mike’s sub. You’ll be able to see how far Brunson and company go whenIt’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s seventeenth season premieres on FX on July 9.

What Happened in the First Half of the ‘Abbott Elementary’-‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ Crossover?
In theAbbott Elementaryepisode “Volunteers,” the staff of Abbott were overjoyed to see that they’d finally recruited some much-needed staffing reinforcements. However, Melissa (Lisa Ann Walter) soon recognized that the “volunteers” were the personnel of the worst bar in the city, and that they were there to fulfill their court-mandated community service after dumping 50 t-shirts, 100 gallons of baby oil, and a Cybertruck into the Schuylkill River. Chaos ensued as Dee (Kaitlin Olson) tried to steal Gregory (Tyler James Williams) from Janine, Principal Ava (Janelle James) made Mac (Rob McElhenney) into her unwilling aide-de-camp, and Frank (DeVito) attempted to get to the bottom of the school’s raccoon problem with janitor Mr. Johnson (William Stanford Davis). The crossover did have a happy ending for one Paddy’s Pub staffer: thanks to the concerted efforts of Melissa and Barbara (Sheryl Lee Ralph), Charlie (Charlie Day) learned to read.
With the success of theAlways Sunnycrossover,AbbottshowrunnersJustin HalpernandPatrick Schumackerare open to similar events in the future. One possibility: the Pittsburgh-set medical dramaThe Pitt, which shoots across the street fromAbbott.
