The animated featureSausage Partyis certainly one of the weirdest movies to see release this year, but it was almost even weirder. The project percolated for years beforeMegan Ellison’s Annapurna Pictures finally stepped in to finance and produce the pic, which was spearheaded bySeth RogenandEvan Goldbergas a hard R-rated movie that, visually at least, looks like a Pixar film. The result, a story about anthropomorphic food in a supermarket coming to the realization that their purpose in life is to be consumed, is something filthy, funny, and even somewhat thoughtful.
Under the direction ofConrad VernonandGreg Tiernan, the film tackled themes of religious intolerance and the existence of the afterlife, but as weird as this movie is, an earlier cut featured a different ending that doubled down. An alternate ending for the film was shot that involved the animated characters going through the stargate and confronting their live-action selves. They would see Rogen,Edward Norton, andMichael Cerachowing down on some food, resulting in some sort of meta-textual conclusion.
Ultimately the filmmakers decided to end the film before the food protagonists walk through the stargate, but theSausage Partyalternate ending has now been released online as part of a featurette for the film’s Digital HD release. Rogen has already teased that this alternate ending ispart of the idea they have forSausage Party 2, and given how the first movie grossed a whopping $136 million against a budget of just $19 million, it’s entirely possible there’s more of this to come. Moreover, Rogen and Co.are mounting a serious Oscar campaignfor the pic, so this edgy project that nobody wanted to finance may end up being a fully fledged Oscar nominee for Best Animated Feature.
