When last we reported on the Netflix flickThe Devil All the Time, it was to tell you that a pair of the MCU’s A-listers—Chris EvansandTom Holland—would be leading a killer cast for directorAntonio Campos(The Sinner,Christine). Now, it looks like Evans is stepping aside so that his best bud in the Marvel UniverseSebastian Stancan take over acting duties. Is this a prelude of things to come in the MCU? Probably not; Evans’ schedule just got too crowded and Stan was able to step in, asDeadlinereports.

Evans recently committed to Paramount’s sci-fi filmInfinitefor directorAntoine Fuquaand is about to start production on Apple’s series,Defending Jacob. As for Stan, he’ll show up (in some fashion) alongside Evans inAvengers: Endgame, followed by an untitled project fromDrake Doremus.

Written by Antonio andPaulo Campos,The Devil All the Timeis an adaptation ofDonald Ray Pollock’s 2011 award-winning novel. The story is described as “a midwestern gothic involving a serial killer couple, a faith-testing preacher, and a corrupt local sheriff in a story told across two decades.” It takes place in a bygone backwater by the name of Knockemstiff, Ohio, and follows Arvin, the son of beleaguered parents, on a path from bullied kid toward becoming a man of action. No casting assignments have been officially announced just yet, but that role certainly sounds tailor-made for Holland.

Produced byRandall Poster, Ninestories’Jake GyllenhaalandRiva Marker, andMax Born, the film will also starRobert Pattinson,Bill Skarsgard,Mia Wasikowska, andEliza Scanlen. The drama/horror/thriller is expected to arrive on Netflix in 2020.

Here’s the official synopsis from the book (viaAmazon):

In the backwoods of Ohio, Willard Russell’s wife is succumbing to cancer, no matter how much he drinks, prays, or sacrifices animals at his “prayer log.” Meanwhile, his son Arvin is growing up, from a kid bullied at school into a man who knows when to take action. Around them swirl a nefarious cast of characters—a demented team of serial killers, a spider-eating preacher, and a corrupt local sheriff—all braided into a riveting narrative of the grittiest American grain.
