MTV unveiled a new trailer for its fantasy seriesThe Shannara Chroniclesat New York Comic-Con yesterday, and it’s now online for all to enjoy. Based on the beloved book series by authorTerry Brooks, the TV show takes place thousands of years after the destruction of our civilization and revolves around an Elven Princess, a half-human half-elf, and a human who embark on a quest to prevent a demon army from destroying their world.
I continue to be impressed by the sheer scale of storytelling on display in this MTV series. While plenty of networks began developing their own fantasy-tinged TV shows in the wake ofGame of Thrones, few really put the kind of budget behind them that effectively brings another world to life.Shannara Chronicleslooks to do just that, as this trailer is filled with expansive VFX shots and creatures galore. Moreover, it looks like there’s no half-assed attempt to make the series “more palatable” by infusing it with something more grounded. This is full-on fantasy and it doesn’t care who knows it. Is MTV on the cusp of having the “next big thing” original series? Hey, stranger things have happened in the New Golden Age of Television.
