If you’re a fan of the surprisingly well-doneStreet Fighteradaptation that made its way to the web courtesy ofJoey Ansah,Jacqueline QuellaandMark Wooding, we have some good news for you. The creative team behind web seriesStreet Fighter: Assassin’s FistandStreet Fighter: Resurrectionhave closed a deal with Entertainment One andMark Gordonto develop, produce and finance a TV series adaptation in earnest. The web series' production team will executive producer with eOne handling international sales.
The web series starredChristian Howard–who also wrote the episodes with Ansah–as Ken Masters alongsideMike Moh’s Ryu, and the story followed the two famous video game franchise fighters as they studied martial arts and developed incredible abilities. The new TV series will advance the story forward a bit.Deadlinereports that it will draw from the “World Warrior story-arc, introduced in the 1991Street Fighter II: The World Warrior.” Guile and Chun-Li will join Ryu and Ken in their efforts to take down the global crimelord, M. Bison. Though they’ll take different paths to get there, ultimately the four heroes will come together in Bison’s World Warrior Tournament, as you might have guessed. This project has a promising premise and a proven team behind the camera, so consider me cautiously optimistic for this one!
Gordon, eOne’s President and Chief Content Officer, Film, Television and Digital, had this to say:
“Street Fighter is a global tour de force franchise, having garnered immense worldwide commercial success and built a vast devoted fanbase that has only grown through its 30 year legacy. We are thrilled to be teaming up with Joey, Jacqueline and Mark, who are already so deeply connected to this brand, to bring this adored story to television audiences everywhere. A particular strength ofStreet Fighteris the wide range of ethnically diverse characters and powerful women featured in the game. It will allow us to build an inclusive and engaging TV universe.”
Capcom is clearly a part of the production as well.Yoshinori Ono, Capcom Executive Producer forStreet Fighter, said this in a statement:
“After a long search, guided by the team behindAssassin’s Fist,we are delighted to be partnering with a company with the outstanding TV experience of Mark Gordon and eOne. They have the credentials to help us launch a faithful adaptation ofStreet Fighteras a major TV series."
The new TV project is likely an evolved version of a third chapter in the Machinima series' plans, but it remains to be seen whether or not any of that series' actors will make the transition over to this new series. Let’s hope so since they’ve put blood, sweat, and tears into their performances so far and deserve at least the chance to take their characters to the next level. Chun-Li and Guile, however, would be newcomers entirely since they’ve yet to appear in the web series; that’s a great opportunity to land some recognizable names or go with up-and-coming talents.
