In its first season on CBS,Supergirl"introduced" Superman by way of silhouette, peripheral vision, oblique reference, humble brag, and text message, but never as a flesh-and-blood hero. That’s about to change. Now thatSupergirlhas joinedArrow,The Flash, andDC’s Legends of Tomorrowon The CW, it seems that the series will get an additional super-boost with the appearance of Kara’s cousin, Kal-El.
We’re not sure who is going to be donning the cape, but we do know when Superman will appear. Fans won’t have to wait long to see the superhero since he’ll be showing up in the first two episodes of the new season. That’s a brilliant way to draw new eyes to the series and cement its place on The CW, and it’s a bit of a common-sense move that CBS never brought to fruition, for whatever reason.
Here’s what Warner Bros. had to say about the character’s appearance:
“The iconic character of Superman will first be seen visiting his cousin Kara in National City at the beginning of the series’ second season.”
Casting is underway, but no frontrunners have been mentioned. That hasn’t stopped the fanbase from clamoring forSmallville’sTom Welling, however, and I’m sure folks hoping for aHenry Cavillcameo aren’t far behind. Who knows, maybe even Superman’s shadowy stand-in from theSupergirlpilotKevin Caliberwill get a callback.

“Greg, Ali and I are beyond thrilled to welcome Clark Kent and his slightly-more-famous alter ego to the world ofSupergirl. Superman will be appearing in the first two episodes of the new season and we cannot wait to see who next dons the red cape!”
For the nitpickers among you, yes, Kal-El did already make an appearance onSupergirl, but he was played by youngsterDaniel DiMaggio, who turned up on a simulated Krypton when Kara imagined herself back on her home planet, pre-explosion. Expect a much more grown-up version this fall whenSupergirlreturns Mondays at 8/7c on The CW.
