Released in 1999, the film announced Shyamalan as a director to watch out for, earning him comparisons toSteven Spielberg. The movie also earned him a Best Director nod at the Oscars, in addition to a Best Picture nomination. Shyamalan enjoyed tremendous success over the next few years, buthit a major slumpin the late 2000s and early 2010s. He has since bounced back, returning to his roots anddelivering modestly budgeted thrillers, most of which have performed very well at the box office.
