The film explores the dark history of the Canadian Indian residential school system, which was designed to isolate Indigenous children from their families and forcibly assimilate them into Euro-Canadian culture. The system, which lasted over a hundred years, has been acknowledged as cultural genocide, and its effects are still felt in Canadian society to this day.
Sugarcanehad its world premiere at the2024 Sundance Film Festival, where it received critical acclaim and won the Grand Jury Award for Directing. The film went on to win numerous other accolades as well, including an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary Feature and the National Board of Review’s Best Documentary award. A powerful film that investigates one of the worst acts of widespread cruelty in Canadian history,Sugarcaneis a compelling and clear-eyed piece of journalism that’s also a tribute to the resilience and perseverance of the Indigenous communities targeted by this act of genocide.
