Sony’sSpider-Manspin-off universe is largely considered to bea major failure by fans, now five releases in, but the reality is the franchise has had more box office hits than misses. The latest film to find success isVenom: The Last Dance, which has amassed$330 million at the international box office. Pair this with its $138 million domestically, andVenom: The Last Dancehas hauled in over $468 million at the worldwide box office — more than four times its reported budget of $100 million. This goes for both of the previous entries in theVenomfranchise as well. The first grossed over $800 million on the same $100 million budget, while the sequel,Venom: Let There Be Carnageearned over $500 million while also keeping the production cost in the $100 million arena.

Morbiusis also widely considered to be a major flop, but the film managed to gross $162 million on a reported production budget of $75 million, meaning while it certainly didn’t help executives at Sony Pictures further line their pockets, it also didn’t break the bank either. The same can’t be said forMadame Web, which narrowly managed to exit theaters after grossing $100 million at the worldwide box office, with $43 million coming from domestic earnings and $56 million from its international haul. The film’s budget was reportedly around the same asMorbius, but box office experts predicted the film would lose Sony over $200 million. Still, the profit from theVenommovies alone has been enough to recuperate the losses fromMadame WebandMorbius.

Sony Will Take Another Swing With ‘Kraven the Hunter’

According to insiders,Kraven the Hunterwill reportedly beSony’s most expensive film to date, holding a production budget of around $130 million. The film is not being predicted to dazzle at the box office to the same level asVenom: The Last Dance, especially if its once again anotherSpider-Manmovie that doesn’t have Spider-Manin it (although it beingSony’s first R-rated Marvel filmis a step in the right direction). Sony doesn’t have any other movies waiting afterKraven the Hunter, but the studio has teasedmore coming from Knull. Only time will tell what their plans are for the cosmic villain.
